This song was first recorded as a demo in 1993 but not properly recorded until it's inclusion in the double album "Getting Off At Redfern" some 16 years later.
A beautiful ballad with a rock edge inspired by Joyce Kilmer's "Trees" using quotes from the parody written in 1933 by Ogden Nash.
A duet of male and female vocals in reverse contrast to each other to form a dynamic and powerful ballad when climactic guitars are thrown into the mix. "You'll never see, a billboard lovely as a tree, perhaps unless the billboards fall, you'll never see a tree at all".
The music video contains footage from a 3000 mile road trip and all the wonders noticed, and sometimes largely un-noticed, that happen along the way. The journey ends at the infamous "Bates Motel".

BILLBOARDS
(Copyright 1993/2006 Rob Bender)
1. We never get too far, without a price to pay
The other side takes heart, with nothing more to say,
As the day breaks, into your room, right through your window pane,
I'll be driving, by open fields, along the highway lane
(Which reminds me . . .)
CH1. "You'll never see, a billboard lovely as a tree,
Perhaps unless, the billboards fall,
You'll never see a tree at all,"
Said Ogden Nash in '33, in a parody of Joyce Kilmer's "Trees",
The flying dove, the velvet glove,
Have come to wave "Goodbye my love"
2. Words are not enough, when words are all you've got,
The reasoning drags on, because it's all a con
And the night holds, a place to delve,
Into the reasons why
But it won't change, a single thing,
'Cause I've made up my mind
CH2. The time has come, to find a space where I belong
No telephone, and no way home,
I watch the endless sky alone
And the winter shade, from the trees above,
Hide the colours of your undying love,
Exchanging rings, and other things,
Doesn't count for anything.
(That reminds me . . .)
CH1. "You'll never see, a billboard lovely as a tree,
Indeed unless, the billboards fall,
You'll never see a tree at all,"
Said Ogden Nash in '33, in a parody of Joyce Kilmer's "Trees",
The flying dove, the velvet glove,
Have come to wave "Bye-bye my love"
